With so many options available for window treatments it can be paralyzing to choose which type would work best for you. Let me educate you about one of the most popular styles, the Honeycomb (aka Cellular) shade.
The Beginning of the Honeycomb Shade
In 1985 Hunter Douglas Started the cellular shade craze by releasing the Duette Series. The first of its kind, the innovative closed cell structure of the Duette raised the window treatment game to a whole new level. The shades were soft, durable, and extremely energy efficient. Thus, leading other manufacturers to release their own versions of the cellular shade.
Warmer in the Winter, Cooler in the Summer
According to the US department of Energy, a homes windows and doors account for about 25-40% of it’s heating and cooling costs. Honeycomb shades help to reduce these numbers through their unique cell shaped design. By trapping air inside the cells, the shades provide an insulating barrier between heat or cold coming through your windows and the home’s interior. There are several styles of honeycomb shades each will have its own insulting value, some better than others. It has been stated that this style of window treatment can reduce temperature transfer through the window by as much as 55-65%
Versatility
Another major attraction to honeycomb shades is the varying levels of light control and privacy that they provide. Some shades are available in light filtering fabrics, while others provide a greater level of control through room darkening fabrics. A more recent design goes a step further, and act as two shades in one. In addition to the light filtering or room darkening cellular shades, some manufacturers have added a pleated sheer fabric between the cellular shades and the head rail, to add more versatility to the honeycomb shade. The sheer layer allows the user to see through the shade, while maintain a slight level of privacy.
Honeycomb shades also offer a wide range of versatility when it comes to the way in which the shade is operated. Cellular shades can be operated with the traditional cords, continuous cord loop, cord less, and by motorization. This is also a good point to mention that the industry as a whole is making a push to go completely cordless whenever possible, for child and pet safety.
